@chanchoman62 nope. If it breaks, everything above 2000 km would drift into space. Most of the cable that falls would burn up in the atmosphere. Besides, I read somewhere that the whole freaking ribbon, 100000km long ( 36000 to GEO, 64000 counterweight) weights about 800 tons. Un-freaking-believable.
